I met Steve in the mid seventies at Tallahassee, Florida while on a trip. Steve was flying an Aerostar and I was flying a Beechcraft Baron. We struck up a conversation in the FBO and it wasn't long into our conversation that we discovered that we were both sailors. At the time I was living aboard my Hunter 30 in Pensacola and Steve had a Hunter 27 on the east coast. Both of us had a love of flying and sailing, so it was a natural that we became friends. What a treat being Steve's friend all these years. I sailed with Steve and brother Ron from the Berry Islands in the Bahamas aboard Steve's boat, S/V Con Brio and he sailed with me from Pensacola to Marathon in the Florida Keys aboard the S/V Viking. Both long trips generated great stories and memories that I will always cherish. Steve was the most down to earth pilot and sailor that I have ever met. Our conversations about flying, sailing and grandchildren will be missed in a big way. Steve's character was such that I have no doubt at all that he will be experiencing an eternity of fair winds, beam reaches and ATC clearances of 'cleared direct to destination'. Steve will be in my prayers as long as I am here. Rest In Peace Steve! My sympathy to Dru and all Steve's family. I know he will be deeply missed for a long time to come. I am sorry I could not get there in time for the memorial, but I promise I was there in spirit.
