Oscar Helms' Obituary
Melvin “Oscar” Helms of Astatula, FL made his way to heaven February 16, 2023.
Born in Eustis, Florida and growing up in Tavares, FL, Oscar will always be remembered as a loving husband, wonderful brother, amazing father, and dear friend. Anyone that knew Oscar would say that having him in their lives was a privilege. He never met a stranger and wouldn’t think twice about giving his last shirt to someone in need. He will always be known as the most honest and straightforward person you’d ever meet. To put it simply, to know him was to love him.
Oscar didn’t come from much. In fact, he didn’t even make it to the 8th grade. Most would let life’s obstacles get in the way or define them. He didn’t. He retired from the Lake County School Board after 35 years working within the warehouse and grounds department. He had the pleasure to work alongside some of the most amazing men you’d ever meet. Outside of his career, he was proud of the home and life he built and cherished with his wife Kathy, loved his dogs unconditionally and had a passion for making his yard absolutely beautiful.
Oscar is survived by the love of his life Kathy Helms, daughters Tracey Nobles and Kristin (Rod) Foys, stepson Noah (Christine) Rust, grandchildren Mackenzie Nobles and Jaxton Foys, sister Julie (Neal) Lewis, brothers Alvin (Connie) Helms, Dean (Tanya) Scott, Charlie Scott, Erwin “Fuzz” Scott, and Marion (Bubba) Scott.
A celebration of life will be held February 25, 2023, at Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home in Tavares, Fl. A viewing will be held from 12PM-1PM with a formal service to follow from 1PM-2PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in Oscar’s memory to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. www.pancan.org
