Lennie Humphrey's Obituary
Lennie Humphrey was born to James Garfield and Nancy Walters on August 3, 1943. She is survived by her husband Samuel Wesley Humphrey of Mt. Dora, son Dennis Humphrey of Mt Dora, and sons Gregory Humphrey and Jeffery Humphrey, both of Grand Island. She is also survived by her brother Ross Walters of Eustis. She leaves behind six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, along with countless nieces and nephews. Her mother and father preceded her in death along with her five brothers Hoyt Walters, Clayton Walters, Pete Walters, Raymond Walters, and Jule Walters, and sister Margie Hurt.
Lennie and Wesley married on November 29, 1963 at the Assemblies of God Church in Tavares Florida.
Lennie had a number of titles: wife, mother, aunt, sister, and grandmother, but her favorite and most cherished title was Grandma.
If you found yourself at her door day or night you knew you were safe. She welcomed people into their home for a hot meal, a cup of coffee or just a shoulder. Lennie was the backbone of the family. Her home was a safe haven for all of us. If we had been bad she knew, if we had been good she knew, and the in between did not matter, her home was always open to us.
She had a lot of spirit and she did not bite her tongue too often, but she gave you the truth sprinkled with love.
Lennie worked many jobs, but you could always find her raising her boys and spending time with them, usually at the ball field and probably in the Tavares High School concession stand. For many years she lived at those baseball and football fields with her three boys.
She was the spit fire that would tell you like it is and then love you with her whole heart and soul. If she counted you among the ones she loved, you were blessed. When times were tough, Lennie and Uncle Wesley’s home was the shelter in the storm…it provided safety and love. She always had a cup of coffee and a smile and a hand to hold you, but don’t think her love and kindness was going to prevent you from having to hear some hard truth, because you were going to get the truth, but she was going to be there for you no matter what.
Who was Lennie Humphrey? She was the one that held the family together, she was our backbone, she was the matriarch for the Walters, and she was sugar and spice and everything nice, with a little vinegar for good measure.
