John "Shan" Shanahan's Obituary
John H. Shanahan of Tavares passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at the age of 88. He was born in Rising Sun, Indiana. John proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War. He also played baseball on the Army team. After his military service, John attended the University of Kentucky, where he played baseball and basketball. He was also a member of the K Club, for former University of Kentucky athletes, as well as a member of Sigma Nu.
John and his family moved to Tavares from Orlando 32 years ago. Shan, as he was affectionately known to his family and friends, was the owner of State Plumbing in Orlando until he retired a few years after moving to Tavares. Shan was an avid Golfer. He loved animals. Shan attended church at the Cross of Mount Dora.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Shanahan in 2003. Shan is remembered and will be dearly missed by his wife of 68 years, Mary Jane “Mimi” Shanahan; daughters, Susan Joyner (Joe) of St. Augustine and Pam Lanzi (Ray) of Palm City; sister, Jo Smith of Winchester, Kentucky; grandchildren, Shannon Shiell (Ian) of Palm Beach Gardens, Erin Pangerl of Nashville, Tennessee, Meghan Saxon (Josh) of St. Augustine and Andy Pangerl (fiancée, Brittany) of Boca Raton; great-grandchildren, Lauren Shiell, Andrew Shiell, Mackenzie Saxon and Scarlett Saxon.
A graveside ceremony will be held on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Tavares Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Packing House/Far Reach Ranch “Home of Heavenly Blueberries” - 1255 S. Dora Blvd., Tavares.
