The date was January 1st, 1976 or 77, in Key West the weather was nice, just a little overcast. I phoned my friend, Sidewinder, better known to you as John Bogue, to ask if he wanted to go for a ride on the motorcycles. He agreed to go, and take Roy along. We rode to Marathon, and of all things, it rained most of the way there! Once in Marathon, he asked where I intended to go. I had no specific destination in mind, so he said follow me. We stopped at a laundry, where Sidewinder removed as much clothing as he could, and still remain decent, including his shoes, and tossed them in a dryer. Oh what fun! Roy attempted to climb into a dryer as well, at which he was severely scolded.
Sidewinder decided to ride my motorcycle home, because it had a fairing and he would stay a little dryer on the way home. Of course the sun came out and it was warm and bright all the way home. So he suffered from very little air flow around the windshield!
I learned a lot from him. Did you know it's a sin to eat bread without butter? That's what he told me. I think he buttered every piece a bread he ever ate, including hot dog buns. He was a funny guy, a great friend, and a loved brother in Christ.
On the day before his death, I read these words from my morning devotions,
O eyes that are red with weeping, cease your scalding flow, for in a little while ye shall know no more tears! None can wipe tears away like the God of love, but He is coming to do it. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." Come, LORD, and tarry not;
