I met Jay-Bird about eleven years ago playing a game online, and somehow that random match turned into a friendship that lasted over a decade. We joked about everything — life, family, and whatever chaos the game threw at us — just two kids at heart behind headsets. It always made us laugh that we called each other by our gamertags, Mavrick and FeelThaFunk (Funk), even when we talked on the phone.
He was an incredible man, with a love for his family and friends that always showed.
In Destiny, we have a saying for when a Guardian loses their Light:
Eyes up, Guardian.
Your watch is ended, but your Light lives on.
We’ll take it from here.
I’m going to miss you, brother. Your Light will shine bright for years to come. Thank you for being part of my family’s story, and for letting me be part of yours.
Rest in peace, Guardian.
