I always just called him "Asher" and he usually called me "Meathead" (but with a grin on his face).
I remember he offered time and again to show me how to catch a fish as we stood next to each other with our lines in the water along the bank of some river, many rivers. He also determined once that he needed to teach me how to ride my horse. He just said "climb on Meathead and follow me". What I didn't know at the time is that he had picked a very steep hill to ride up. A hill a person would struggle to climb on foot. I remember I could hear him laughing all the way up and all the way down. And I remember he had to wait for me at both top and bottom.
I wish I had even just 1 of those days to relive.
I have such a long list of special memories of my times with Asher and an even longer list of the ways he influenced my life. All of this fills a very large place in my heart and always will.
He is the only man I have ever known that could fully express himself to me in 5 words or less. He knew what I needed him to say, in the moment, he said the rest of what I needed to hear with his eyes rather than with words. I knew by the way he looked at me what was in his heart and I knew above all that he loved me. That was all I really needed to know.
I can only hope he knew how much I loved him. The way a son loves his father.
I'll see you again Asher. I will always be your Meathead son-in-law,
Vance
