To all that have signed this book, reached out to our family and have simply had thoughts of love and light towards our father - Thank You. To try to sum up my father in words would be undignified, so why try? One word? AMAZING. He cared, he loved deeply and he was non-judgmental - brilliant (if not genius), gearhead, and full of life and love. He will be in our thoughts daily for the rest of our loves. They don't make 'em' like that anymore'. The best we can all do is learn from his giving nature - his talents - his strength. How lucky any one of us would be to have even an inch of his kind spirit. We were very sorry to hear about your loss. We have many memories of Gene going back to high school days. Drag racing was a big part of our lives, but don't believe all Gene's stories about those days. He was a good friend and will truly be missed. I was shocked and saddened to see Gene had passed away. We were good friends back in the mid to late 60's and did a lot together. If I remember right, we met at "Wayne's Texaco" service station where all of us "motorheads" hung out.It was located in the Norview section of Norfolk. No drama, just cars. I bought his 1966 Corvette 427 in the spring of 1967. I guess I lost contact with him around 1971. I thought of him often over the years. I had only known Gene for about 5 years. In that time I enjoyed his company for hours on end at the motorcycle shop that I worked. His love of vehicle performance was evident. He loved to hear a good motor run, loved to watch the progress of projects and he enjoyed just being in the shop. I think the smell of fuel, grease and oil was somewhat of an attractant for him. He always had a way to bring a smile to your face or a laugh to the room, whether it was one of the off the wall t-shirts he wore, a joke or a story he shared or just his infectious laughter. His sense of humor was always a bright spot in my day.He always had a way of making me feel good about myself in spite of what was going on around me. I always felt like he believed in me. He genuinely cared for those around him and it showed. Probably the most memorable thing about him is the fact I never heard him talk bad about ANY body. Any one he ever talked about was at least 'a nice guy'. Sure, he liked some better than others, but he could always find something positive in everybody. He was fiercely proud of his kids and extremely loyal to his friends. While it's true that our loss is great, Heaven's gain is greater.
