Carl was born on January 3, 1948 in Saratoga Springs, NY to parents Carson and Lois Purvee. He graduated from Mount Dora High School in 1966. After high school, Carl was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After basic training, Carl was assigned to the 1st Battalion 7th Cavalry Airmobile Division and sent immediately to Vietnam. During his time in the service he earned several decorations including: National Defense Service Metal, Vietnam Service Metal 2/Bronze Stars, Vietnam Campaign Metal w/60 Device, Bronze Star Medal, and Combat Infantryman Badge. Carl was Honorably Discharged from the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant/E-6.
Upon his return home from Vietnam he started a family and moved to the Dona Vista Area. Carl went to work for Winn Dixie Supermarkets and was taught the trade of meat cutting. During his 42 years at Winn Dixie Carl developed many special relationships with coworkers and regulars that frequented his store. Carl was known for his strong work ethic, ability to make you laugh and being a prankster.
After his time at Winn Dixie, Carl found love in woodworking, gardening and Sofia (his therapy dog). Carl was diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) a few years earlier and Sofia was his new best friend. When you would visit him at his home, he was happy to show you his latest project, fresh harvest, or brag about his new found love “Sofia”.
Carl loved to hunt and fish. During the summer you could find him and Angie on the beach surf fishing or in the fall they were in a deer stand waiting for that big buck. Carl was active in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) where he found sobriety, humbleness, and strength. Carl would become an inspiration for others that were headed down the same road as he.
