Christel,At this late date, I am very sorry to read of Tony's passing, of the travesty of Alzheimer's disease that took over his beautiful mind. Daily, my husband and I dine next to his beautiful painting, feeding our souls as we take in nourishment. Now, as I look at the 2002 announcement of his art opening, it is good to know he continued to work through his retirement. In my retirement, I am facilitating painting with a group of memory impaired clients, Alzheimer's among them. It may little comfort to know that I will do this with added zeal in Tony's memory. Christel, I have just now (March 2012) run across an obituary for Tony. I am just a year late in expressing my sadness in hearing this news. I wish I had taken the time to tell him how important he was to me and to my growth as an artist. I am forever grateful. It was with great sadness that I heard of Prof Stoeveken's passing. He was a wonderful teacher and a kind and caring man. He set high standards for his students and guided us to achieve them with great professionalism and humour. As a foreign student he gave me so much extra time and energy and kindness. I learned so much from him, valued him as a person and as an artist and teacher and will never forget him. One of his beautiful lithographs hangs in my home and I think of him everyday when I look at it. So many others have seen it over the years and I tell them about him, so he lives on in the thoughts of many who have never even met him.My deep sympathy to Christel and all his family. Tony was my professor and my mentor not only in Printmaking, but also in many other aspects of life. He always had a way about him that reminded me not to sweat the small stuff. He loved Printmaking and teaching his students all the techniques he had mastered. He was a kind and generous man, a good guy. He regularly talked about his children and his beloved Christel. I am very sadded by Tony's passing even though I sensed that it was coming. Tony was my major professor in graduate school at UW-Milwaukee in the mid 80's. His guidence, advice, and support was key to my success (I have been a professor at UW-Green Bay since 1993 and even before as a adjundt). I cherish the print he gave me when I left Milwuakee and love the hatch marks so characteristic of his drawings. I sent the notice of his passing to the Mid-America Print List Serv so other printmakers would know of his passing - he was loved and respected by so many.I remember fondly bumping into Tony and Christel at Copps in Whitefish Bay for custard a number of times. I remember his last UW-Milwaukee exhibit and how good Tony looked and how happy he was- his work is amazing. The SGC (Southern Graphics Council) conference is in Milwaukee in March 2012 and I'd like to see about doing something in Tony's honor with some of his many students, maybe an exchange portfolio.
