Mrs. Thelma D. Cress, of Groveland, formerly of Lake Francis Estates in Tavares, passed away on Saturday, November 7th, 2009 at the age of 86 years. Thelma was born in San Francisco on September 24, 1923 and was raised in Highland Park, New Jersey where she lived a simple yet comfortable life. That all changed in 1942 at a U.S.O. Dance where she met her future husband, Arling. They had 3 dates before Arling had to leave to participate in World War II. They corresponded throughout the war and upon Arling's return to the states they were married on December 2, 1945 and spent 64 glorious years together. During their marriage Arling and Thelma enjoyed square dancing, camping, boating and gardening while also raising 2 daughters, Nancy and Wendy in a Christian household. The Cress' continued to enjoy the simple and joyous life spending family outings. Thelma dedicated her life to her family. She was a homemaker, girl scout leader, Sunday School teacher and one of her greatest joys was following and supporting her daughters in their local school band programs.Nancy and Wendy each married fine young men from the same town and same high school, Joe and Mark. This family has continued to grow and prosper with grandchildren Michael, Laura, Brian and Melanie and 4 great grandchildren and another on the way. Throughout her life, Thelma always maintained her love for her family, her singing and she was an excellent cook and was often found outdoors, giving her garden that tender loving care and particularly her roses. Thelma will be greatly missed but her family takes great comfort in knowing that she was a Christian lady and that she is with her beloved mother, father and brother in the arms of our Lord.Thelma is remembered by her husband of 64 years, Arling; daughters, Wendy Snider and her husband, Mark of Groveland and Nancy Karwatka and her husband, Joe of BelAir, Maryland as well as 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
