Ronald Gary Smith's Obituary
Ronald “Ron” Gary Smith, proud veteran of the United States Army passed away Wednesday, February 21, 2024, in the AdventHealth Waterman Hospital, in the loving company of Mona Louise Smith, wife.
The son of the late James Lewis “Billy” and Bernice Smith, Ron was born September 7th, 1949, in Wintergarden Florida. Ron enlisted in the Army in 1970 and served in Vietnam as a helicopter mechanic. Ron served for over 20 years and attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. He retired from active duty in 1991. He was a gifted mechanic and technician and shared this gift freely with many. He loved riding motorcycles, especially with the Patriot Guard, and piloting his boat with friends and family.
Ron is survived by his wife of 32 years Mona Smith; his four stepchildren Thomas Wimberly, Stacie Whetzel, Carol Dunn, and James Wimberly; eleven grandchildren; his brothers Michael David Smith, and John Howell Smith; his cousin David Smith; and life-long close friends Buford “Buddy” Powel and Vernon Worth.
Graveside Service will be conducted at 1:30 PM, Wednesday February 28th, 2024, at Florida National Cemetery at 6502 SW 102 Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513. Family and friends will assemble at 12:15 at Steverson, Hamlin, and Hilbish Funeral Home at 226 E. Burleigh Boulevard, Tavares, Florida 32778 and proceed to the Graveside Service.
