Ray Edward Byers' Obituary
Ray Edward Byers of Leesburg, FL passed peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born in Dillsburg, PA, August 28,1932 to the late Russel and Della (Bentz) Byers. Ray graduated from Dillsburg High School, class of 1950.
Enlisted initially in the United States Marine Corp (USMC), he continued his service in the newly formed U.S. Air Force (USAF) during the Korean War as an Air Traffic Control achieving the rank of Tech Sergent. After discharge, he continued his public service with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) serving as an Air Traffic Controller at Washinton National Airport and as Tower Chief at Harrisburg International Airport where he retired after 37 1/2 years. In addition to Ray's dedication to public service, he volunteered as the Air Boss of the Pennsylvania Air Show's at Harrisburg International Airport, Chief Firefighter for Dillsburg's fire department, and was a member of the Dillsburg borough council. Ray was an active member of the VFW, American Legion, Fraternal Order of Freemasonry, and The Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Ray was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.
Ray was preceded in death by his brother Wilfred, sister-in-law Florence, nephew Michael and brother-in-law Lloyd; is survived by his wife Edie; children Gary E of Dillsburg, Pamela S (Richard) of Lake Frederick VA, Neil D (Jessica) of Elkins Park, PA ; grandchildren April, Emily, Alex, Myka, and Logan; and great grandchildren; Shane, Ava, Addison, and Charlotte; and sister Levina.
A celebration of life will be held at Lake Port Square in Leesburg, FL (date: TBA), internment will take place at the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell on Friday, May 9, 2025 at 2:00PM.
