Ralph J. Custar's Obituary
Ralph James Custar died Monday, February 5, 2018, aged 94. Ralph was born July 7, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio to Holly and Lillian Custar. After graduating John Marshall High School in 1943, Ralph served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII from 1943 until 1946. After his time in the service he enrolled in Oklahoma State University and graduated from there in 1952 with a B.S. degree in Agriculture.
After graduation Ralph moved to Tavares, Florida where he met his soon-to-be wife, Mary Treadway. They were married on November 12, 1955 at Union Congregational Church in Tavares and celebrated 55 years of marriage until her death in July 2011.
Ralph had a 34 year long career with the US Postal Service and met hundreds of people who became friends through his time as a Rural Mail Carrier. He coached Little League Baseball for several years and was a long-time member of the Tavares Lions Club. He was also active on various boards and committees in Union Congregational Church.
After retirement in 1987, he and Mary spent the summers in their mountain house near Franklin, NC and winters in Tavares.
Ralph is survived by his daughter Carol Custar Straker and son-in-law Jeff of Eustis; son Gary Custar and daughter-in-law Becky of Atlanta, and his grandsons Ian Custar and Graham Custar and Graham's wife Hannah, along with many nieces and nephews and life-long friends.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2pm Saturday, April 7 at Union Congregational Church, Tavares, FL. All are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, please make any donation to Union Congregational Church Memorial Fund.
