Many of us have enjoyed staying in contact with our high school classmates after graduating from Winter Park High School in 1953. We often talk about how blessed we felt our class was growing up in what we considered to have been the best of times, at the best of places and with the best of adults and classmates around us.
Nancy Cravens Hinton gave our Class “class” as one of the sweetest, most compassionate and intelligent young ladies we knew. We did not have many questions about how she would handle her life. We voted her “Most Likely to Succeed” and ended up being spot on. She was really a most attractive and classy lady—running several businesses, supporting theatrics, singing with a harmony group, traveling the world and serving as a missionary in Japan.
As a coordinator of our Class news, I received frequent notes from Nancy with concerns about her classmates. She always treasured their relationships, attending most of our reunions. We saw little change Nancy over the years since high school. While she was always warm and caring, she also carried the old-school dignity of an especially cultured lady. Her years abroad seemed to give her a special elegance and reserve.
Back in 2007, Nancy, her late husband Dr. Ren Lamba, my wife Pat and I went together on a cruise down the Danube River, starting in Vienna and going through a number of counties. Nancy so enjoyed our stop for a latte and pastries at the world’s first coffee house in Vienna. Our trip was delightful, made especially so because of Nancy’s background as a travel agent.
I am adding a high school photo of Nancy standing in roller skates at our cherished Coliseum in Orlando. She had a talent and love of roller skating.
In our senior years, many of us had to face the pain of loss and infirmity. Nancy was no stranger to these struggles, yet she handled them with characteristic grace and an extraordinary inner strength
She was adored and admired by all of her WPHS classmates and will always be a vivid part of our fondest memories.

Cindie has been my best friend just about my whole life and anytime I visited her family Nancy made it feel like I’d just come home. She told me countless stories over the years of her life and travels and it always amazed me that she had so many different experiences. So many stories!! I have lots of memories of card games at her table and much laughter. She shared a special friendship with my mom and the two of them together were more like happy teenage girls having sleepovers instead of the grandmothers they actually were. I’m grateful for the example Nancy was and I’m a better person for having known her. She brought a lot of salt and light into the world and I’ll dearly miss her hugs. I loved her ❤️
Big hug for you and your family!
