I was saddened to learn of Merle's passing. He was between my children in age. I have special memories of him. I worked with his mother at the bank. I extend my heartfelt sympathy to the family. I met Merle his family in the late 90s. Like everyone else has said he always had a smile on his face. Merle was a laid back kind of guy. He was always there to help you if you needed it or not. And if you asked for his help he jumped right on. There was a time when I was starting a business and Merle and his family would help me get it off the ground. I know Merle was a very hard-working man at his jobs. Let me tell you about a story about Merle. I had a pontoon boat. We would always go out on it with him and his family out on the pontoon boat. I told them that this boat was too slow. So Merle help me get a ski boat. There's one thing that I found out about Merle. I bet some of you did not know that Merle could barefoot ski. Yes I said barefoot skiing. And he was a very good skier. I know I haven't seen Merle in a few years but we did keep it in touch by phone. Merle was my friend from the first day of first grade and still is. I've never heard Merle say a bad word about anyone, which is a rare person. He loved everyone. I stopped in Leesburgh one day hauling cattle and called him from a little quickmart and he ask where I was and I told him, he said look behind the store, his house was just behind it and he was standing outside waiving at me. He took the day and took me to Epcot center, Church St. Station ect., we had a blast! Will always remember the VW beetle that he had, he just knew it would outrun anything. To family and friends of MerleI knew Merla from about age 2 until he left Roosevelt. He was a slow going fellow. Much like his daddy. Had a dry sense of humor and made you laugh. I knew Elaine and Gayla well since we were practically the same age. My heartfelt sympathy to the Wilks family. You will always keep Merle in your heart and memories. I have known Merle since we very, very small children. We attended church at Cold Springs, we in the same class in school, and basically grew up together. I will remember Merle fondly with a forever smile on his face. He was always there to do anything for anyone, and never spoke bad about anyone. As Phil said, "Merle was a Pearl"! Indeed! My sympathy to each of his family members, sisters, and close friends as well as classmates. Merle was a Pearl, I was in his HS Class all 4 years graduating in 1973. So many great memories, Wheat Harvest in Blunt, South Dakota, Halloween nights on Roosevelt's Main St. His VW Beetle next to my Chevelle SS 396, pretty much our relationship, me always in a hurry, he always laid back. He was always there to be a best friend, all I had to do was stop, or at least slow down. Merle would always offer assistance whether you wanted it or not. Sometimes we would take it just to enjoy his pleasure in being so helpful. I'm sorry I never went out of my way when in Florida on business to go by and see him, but of course I never dreamed the Hare would outlive the Turtle.
