Maurice Robert Elkins' Obituary
Maurice Robert Elkins, 87, of Tavares, Florida, passed away on January 22, 2018 of natural causes. Maurice was born in Shelbyville, Indiana on February 14, 1930. He was a resident of Indiana for 73 years. Maurice was married to Ruth Elkins (Richards) in January 1950. Maurice worked 36 years as a Master Mechanic at Allison, a division of General Motors, in Speedway, Indiana. During that time, he was given many Suggestion Awards from Allison GM for process improvement suggestions he submitted.
He enjoyed music, playing the mandolin, renovating houses and could fix anything. He was an avid fitness buff and car enthusiast. If you ever needed help buying a car, you would call Maurice, who knew all about cars.
He was Treasurer at Beacon Baptist Church in Shelbyville, Indiana, where he was a member for over ten years. He was later a member of Speedway Baptist Church until he moved to Florida. At his death, he was a member of Grand Island Baptist Church, Grand Island, Florida.
Maurice is survived by his wife Ruth Elkins and his five children, Ron Elkins and his wife Gabrielle Bovenzi, Mike Elkins, Bruce Elkins, Randy Elkins and Connie Elkins, and the rest of his family and friends.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Mary Elkins (Aldridge) and his two brothers, Richard and Paul Elkins.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to the Michael T. Bovenzi Scholarship Fund, Loyola College Prep, 921 Jordan Street, Shreveport, LA 71101. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish. Reverend Steve Westbrook of Grace Baptist will be officiating. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. at Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home in Tavares.
