Sr. Chief Petty Officer Leo Vaughn, Jr., age 85, of Leesburg was born on Mother’s Day, May 12, 1929 and went home to be with Jesus on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2015. Leo was born in Skiatook (Indian Territory), Oklahoma, to Minnie Ellen Nail and Leslie Leo Vaughn. Leo is survived by his wife, Geneva Taylor Vaughn; sisters, Mary Lou Vaughn Thomas, Skiatook, OK; Helen Marie Vaughn Okerson (George), Skiatook, OK; son, Les Paul Vaughn (Holly), Tavares; daughter, Susan Marie Vaughn Larisey, Savannah, GA; stepdaughters, Debbie Stivender, Tavares; Cathy Puckett (Keith), Charlotte, NC; Tina Chambliss (Steve Townsend), Monroe, NC; niece, Susan Okerson Wheeler, OK; grandchildren, Emily and Taylor Vaughn, Tavares; Tim and Jamie Stivender, Tavares; Rob Hall, Tuscaloosa and Jenni Walton, Ocala; Chris May, Canada; Hope and Dakota Townsend, Monroe, NC; Bobby Tincher, GA; Natalie Tincher Roberts; 6 great grandchildren, and many adopted (in spirit) children and grandchildren. Leo was a very community minded individual over his 86 years on this earth. He was a life member of the Eustis AmVets, life member of the VFW Post 8087, life member of DAV Chapter Seminole#30, life member of the Lake County Historical Society, life member of the Tavares Historical Society, Masonic Lodge 85 Eustis, Scottish Rite, Bahia Shrine of Orlando, American Legion Post 0076, Tavares Kiwanis, Tavares Chamber of Commerce, former Mayor and President of Tavares, former Tavares City Councilmember, former President of the Lake County League of Cities, Honorary Police Officer of the Tavares Police Department, and many others. Leo was a true patriot for this country…he served 30 years in the US Navy…WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Leo was a proud registered member of the Cherokee Nation, Skiatook (Indian Territory), Oklahoma, and most importantly, he was a child of God and a member of the United Faith Assembly of God in Leesburg. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 14, 2015 from 5:00PM until 7:00PM at Steverson Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home, Tavares. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 15, 2015 at 3:00PM at the First United Methodist Church of Tavares. Interment will follow at Tavares Cemetery. There will be a reception following the service at the Tavares Civic Center starting at 5:00PM. Arrangements have been entrusted to Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Funerals and Cremations, 226 E.
