Lawrence John Miceli's Obituary
Lawrence John Miceli, born, August 17th, 1931 passed away quietly on the morning of June 18th, 2014.
He is survived by his loving children Deborah (Gary) Mayhew of Gainesville, Florida, Matthew (Jennifer) Miceli of Umatilla, Florida, Mark Miceli, Lawrence G. (Susan) Miceli, and John (June) Miceli all of Mount Dora, Florida. He is also survived by his loving wife Mary Hart and by his sisters Teresa "Teddy" Becker and Jacqueline "Jackie" Ridenour, both of Lake Worth, Florida, loving grandchildren Lauren, Jonathan, Jessica, Roxy and Ryan, and great-grandson Alexander.
Known as "Laurie", he was the only son of Matteo and Mary Miceli, Italian immigrants who settled in Boston, Massachusetts. Laurie grew up on Dudley and Fairmount Streets in Dorchester, MA where he made lifelong friends.
He attended Boston University and was a U.S. army veteran during the Korean conflict. Laurie was a woman's clothing designer and manufacturer and among his many accomplishments, in 1966 he led the team that made the wedding gown for Luci Baines Johnson, daughter of President Lyndon Baines Johnson, which was worn at the official ceremony and broadcast worldwide.
In 1974, he and his wife Sheila, along with the boys, moved to Pompano Beach, Florida where he established a successful woman's wear design and production business, "Classic Lady Sportswear." He produced many designs that were featured in Burdines, Macy's, Jordan Marsh and other fine clothing stores.
Laurie was an amazingly talented designer, artist, musician, poet and writer. And he was a wonderful husband and father.
He could make you laugh or cry. He could also bait you into a "discussion" on his political opinions, and he always reminded us that we were entitled to our opinions, as long as they were the same as his!
He loved life, dancing, music, art, his family and grandchildren to a fault. He touched so many lives in so many different ways. He will be loved and missed forever by us all.
A memorial ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 28 at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared on the tribute wall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Rd., Tavares, FL 32778.
