John Buck Thompson's Obituary
John Buck Thompson, of Deland, (formerly of Tavares) Florida passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at the age of 94 years. He was born in Princeton, West Virginia. John proudly served his country in the US Army in World War II. Serving in the Northern Solomons, Guadalcanal and the Philippine Island, he received a Purple Heart, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and a Bronze Star Medal. After his service, John returned to the states and married Shirley Elaine Pettrey in 1946. They relocated to central Florida that same year. John worked many years for NCR Corporation before retiring. He later went to work in Real Estate as a Broker. In his free time he enjoyed playing Golf. John attended First United Methodist Church of Tavares. His wife, Shirley, passed away on September 14, 2006 after 60 years of marriage. John relocated to Deland in 2007. He is remembered and will be dearly missed by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Kimberly Thompson of Deland; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela K. and Bruce Shaffner of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; sisters, Jackie Pritchett of Fairlawn, Virginia and Annalee Hanson of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee; grandchildren, Christopher Shaffner and his wife, Rimi of Jupiter, Florida, Michael Shaffner and his wife, Lesley of Houston, Texas and Jill Leech of Tampa, Florida; great grandchildren, Marquis Shaffner, Mia Shaffner and Grayson Shaffner as well as his niece, Kelly Godbee of Lawrenceburg, Indiana. A graveside ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 11 at 10:00 am at Tavares Cemetery. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared on the tribute wall.
