John Clyde McLendon's Obituary
JC McLendon, age 68, of Howey-In-The-Hills, FL passed away on Monday, February 18, 2019. He was born October 18, 1950 in Birmingham, AL and moved to Lake County in 1998. JC loved his family, his country, golfing and Alabama football- Roll Tide Roll! He enlisted in the Air Force for officer training. Since it was the end of the Vietnam War he retired early with an honorable discharge with the rank of 2nd LT. He was also a staunch conservative. He was recruited by athletic director Paul Bear Bryant and was awarded a full 4 year golf scholarship. One of his biggest thrills in his early years was when he won in his age division in the Future Master Tournament in Dothan, AL along with his brother Mac and family friend Hubert Green. To say he was a fan of all sports Alabama is putting it lightly. He even named our 2 beloved Golden Retrievers Bear and Bryant! In his later years he loved working in his yard, one grass plug at a time. He was secretly thrilled when he was awarded yard of the month by the Howey-In-The-Hills Women’s Garden Club…well deserved. But his true loves were his son Kevin (Sarah) McLendon and his beautiful daughter Shannon (Jason) McLendon Wright. J C has 6 beautiful grandchildren all under the age of seven: Jackson, Christian, Collette, Blakely, Beckett and Layla. He is also survived by his wife, Sandy McLendon; brother, Rayfield Benson McLendon “Mac”; and a sister, Suzanne Vickery. He was a good friend and neighbor and we had a wonderful life together in Howey-In-The-Hills. He will be missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chrohn’s and Colitis AL/NW FL Chapter, PO Box 59486, Birmingham, AL 35259 (research only) or to Jacob’s Stepladder, a local charity helping children in need, PO Box 414, Howey-In-The-Hills, FL 34737. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 10:00AM at Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Chapel. Arrangements have been entrusted to Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Funerals and Cremations, 226 E. Burleigh Blvd., Tavares, FL 32778, (352)343-4444.
