John Charles Karvelas' Obituary
John C. Karvelas, known to everyone as Jack, passed away on July 20, 2026, in The Villages, Florida, following a brief acute illness. He was born on April 16, 1958, in Medford, Massachusetts, and grew up in Revere, where his spirited personality first took root and remained a defining part of him throughout his life.
Jack found his calling as a respiratory therapist, dedicating his career to helping others breathe especially the smallest and most vulnerable patients. He developed a remarkable expertise in neonatal respiratory care, earning the respect of colleagues and physicians alike. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jack answered the call to serve in New York City at the height of the crisis. When equipment was scarce, his knowledge of manual ventilation techniques became an invaluable resource, and his skill and experience helped care for countless patients during an extraordinary time. His career eventually brought him to Florida, but Massachusetts was always home in his heart.
Jack lived life on his own terms. He loved a cold Budweiser, a cigarette, and the simple pleasures that made him happy. With a Corvette in the garage and a boat at the dock, he felt he had all the toys he could ever want. Some of his happiest moments were spent with his wife, Joyce, and friends on Lake Winnipesaukee, grilling Floramo's marinated steak tips, mixing up his signature Hawaiian rum punch, and enjoying the company of neighbors and lifelong friends.
Jack's first marriage was blessed with three daughters—Jamie, Jaclyn and Jessica—and two beloved grandchildren, Frankie and Jack. His marriage to Joyce also brought him a connection to her family.
Like all of us, Jack was not without flaws. Some of his struggles led to periods of estrangement, but those he held close in his heart remained there always. He loved deeply, missed those from whom he had become separated, and treasured the memories they shared.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, John C. Karvelas Sr. and Alice (Medeiros) Karvelas. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; his children and grandchildren; his sister, Virginia McCarthy; his stepson; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will remember him.
