James Thomas Tuberty's Obituary
Tuberty, James Thomas, B.G. US Army (RET), age 84, of Howey-in-the-Hills, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2009. After serving his country in the US Armed Forces for 31 years and surviving combat assignments in three wars, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, he lost his eight month battle with cancer on August 28, 2009 at home with his family.Born in Albert Lea, Minnesota on July 14, 1925 to James and Beulah Tuberty, he left high school after his junior year in 1943 to enlist in the Navy and served in World War II. After returning from the war, he finished high school in 1946.He entered the Army through a program titled Circular 330 which provided for a direct commission. He was sent to Fort Benning, Georgia to attend the Infantry Special Associate Basic Course in January 1, l949. Upon completion, he was sent to Japan, assigned to the Second Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment of the First Cavalry Division at Camp McGill. He spent a year serving in the Korean War.Upon return from the war, he was assigned to the 10th Infantry Division. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College and the U.S. Army War College. He was graduated from the University of Omaha. After two tours of duty in the US Army Europe, he was transferred to the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment and senior advisor to the 18th ARVN Division while in Vietnam. He finished his military career stationed in Germany assigned to the 1st Armored Division as 2nd Brigade commander, then to the 1st Armored Division headquarters as Brigadier General, as Assistant Division Commander, Giessen, Germany.His military service saw him decorated for heroism and valor in three wars. For his courageous and meritorious service he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with One Oak Leaf Cluster and a Bronze Star Medal with Valor. He received several other distinguished service awards spanning his career.Upon his retirement from the US Army on July 1, 1975, he assumed a senior role with the Public Service Company of New Hampshire, assigned to the Seabrook Power station.He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Beverly (Erickson) Tuberty; his two daughters and their families, Virginia and her husband, Robert Holmes of Winter Springs, Florida; Yvonne and her husband Michael Pilot of Ridgefield, Connecticut; his sister, Sister Joan Tuberty of Minneapolis, Minnesota; brother, Robert, and his wife, Betty Tuberty of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren, Heather Rhoads, Eric Holmes, Lindsay and Patrick Pilot; great-granddaughter, Charlotte Rhoads and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at St. Patrick Catholic Church of Mt. Dora with Father James Berning officiating.
