George "The Moose" O'Connor, Jr.
George was born in Astoria, Queens, New York, the oldest of the three sons of George and Irene O'Connor on November 30, 1930. His father was Irish Catholic and belonged to St. Raymond's. He represented them in the Catholic League doing what he loved the most, playing baseball. This led to playing at William Cullen Bryant High School and on the playgrounds throughout NYC. A semipro team that competed in up state New York Lodge League noticed his talents and selected George at the Guard position. After graduation, he enlisted to join the 508th Airborne Division of the United States Army, with his brother Donald, at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
George followed in his father's career path and joined the Local Plumbers Union. This led to a 50 year tenure at Honeywell, Inc. He married Elizabeth Cecilia Moran on August 22, 1955. Their family included Kathryn, Jeanne, Daniel, James and Mary. Betty, Kathy and Jeanne predeceased him.
George loved listening to Barbara Streisand loudly on the stereo. He also had many dogs throughout his life. Especially his "grand dogs" which loved to swim with him as well as his beloved grandkids. Where he would spend time running, swimming and playing baseball in the yard with him.
Visitation for George is scheduled for Saturday, May 30th, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, at the Steverson, Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Home, 226 E. Burliegh Blvd., Tavares, Florida, 32778. Funeral Services will follow his visitation beginning at 11:00 AM with Father Charles Deeney from St. Patrick's Catholic Church officiating.
