Gary Grant Ackerman's Obituary
On Saturday, August 3, 2024, Gary Grant Ackerman, loving father, son, brother, cousin, uncle, grandfather, and friend to many, passed away peacefully at the age of 73. Born on April 1, 1951, Gary grew up and lived the majority of his life in Toledo, Ohio. After a few career opportunities, Gary returned to a 40+ year career with Conrail railroad before retiring in 2017 from Norfolk Southern. He relocated outside of Orlando, Florida in 2021. In Ohio, Gary greatly enjoyed time with his friends, frequenting establishments serving veterans, spending free time in his private organizations like the Arrow Club, burning up the roads on his motorcycle, shooting pool, camping, and playing euchre or darts.
Gary was predeceased by his mother, Josephine Steedman and his love, Darlene Blair. He is survived by former wife, Rita Roberts Reuter; their daughters, Shannon (Sonny) Dukes and Kristina Matthews; his grandchildren, Garyn, Emma, Mallory, Madelynn, Ashleigh, Austin, and six great grandchildren; his siblings Paul Ackerman (Patricia), James Steedman (Karen), and Marc Steedman; and many extended family members in Ohio, Michigan, and other states.
An intimate memorial will be scheduled in the fall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a local veteran’s group or can be mailed to Mt. Dora Amvets Post 1992, 32201 Amvets Way, Mt Dora, FL 32757 in memory of Gary G Ackerman.
