Evelyn McCurdy Brewer's Obituary
Evelyn McCurdy Brewer
Proverbs 31:10-31
February 6, 1932 — April 11, 2023
To sum up the life of the remarkable Evelyn Brewer in only a brief few paragraphs is quite a challenge. She was slight of frame, but the epitome of the saying “big things come in small packages.” She was quiet by nature, but “in quietness and rest she found her strength.” She was wise which was evident in how she exhibited all the fruits of the Spirit of God; she loved everyone deeply and from the heart, she carried joy deep in her soul and wore a smile on her face that came from her heart, peace was a hallmark of who she was as she walked in true peace all the days of her life, and patience was her virtue as she never got anxious about anything and kept her soul at rest every day trusting only in her Lord Jesus, kindness was her banner as she spread the love of God over everyone she met, goodness and gentleness completely defines her nature, faithfulness was her very sustenance, and self-control was as second nature to her.
She was born Mary Evelyn McCurdy in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Wendell Duke McCurdy and Grace McKim Clementson McCurdy. Although she adored the name Mary, she was called Evelyn and by age 17 married Charlie (Ched) Brewer and was known as Evelyn Brewer for the rest of her life. She was the middle born of five children; Peggy, Bud, Evelyn, Stan, and Dana. She is predeceased by her husband, Charles C. Brewer, Sr. and her son, Charles C. Brewer, Jr., as well as her parents an both her sisters. Her remaining legacy of love includes her daughters, Karin (Mike) Sapp and Beverlie Brewer, her daughter-in-law, Sharon Brewer, and grandchildren Jessica (John) Pritchett, Chad (Julia) Brewer, Josh Griffin, Zach (Steph) Brewer, Ashton Brewer, and Abby (Hector) Celis, and great-grandchildren, Kaveri Brewer, Norah Brewer, Henry Brewer, Molly Pritchett, and Griffin Pritchett.
Evelyn spent her childhood living in their family home on Seminole Drive in Chattanooga, and making frequent trips to the McCurdy family farm in Lafayette, Georgia. And, of all the cheerleaders of Central High School in Chattanooga, Tennessee, we have no doubt that Evelyn was the perkiest and most adorable of the lot.
Evelyn was an industrious woman who created a beautiful home life for her family, becoming an excellent cook and seamstress. But she also, along with her husband and two other couples, planted the Church of Christ in Fernandina Beach, Florida, and helped grow it into a viable entity. She taught Sunday School, sang in weddings, and directed many events for the church family there. She also became a girl scout leader in Fernandina Beach taking large numbers of girls on regular camping trips and even a train trip to Savannah to explore the roots an heritage of the Girl Scouts. She later became the regional director for Girl Scouts of America.
Shortly after the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1970, Evelyn and Charlie purchased a church building company called Christian Builders, Inc. The two of them worked tirelessly together building the business for many years until they moved to Tavares, Florida in 1988, and downsized their business from building all over USA to focusing only on Florida regions. Their entrepreneurial spirit has continued to course through the veins of their children.
A private family memorial will take place at Evelyn’s favorite beach in October, 2023. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that charitable donations be made to the Orange Avenue Church of Christ in Eustis, Florida in her memory. Special thanks to the Care-a-Medics and the nursing and home-health staff at Cornerstone Hospice.
