Douglas Owen Cole's Obituary
Douglas (Doug) Owen Cole died Thursday, August 28, 2014 at the Ruleme Center in Eustis, Florida. He was 84.
He was born on April 19, 1930 in Toronto, Canada to Harold and Marie Cole. Mother Marie was a graduate of Pratt Institute in Art and taught art in Albany, NY. His father graduated from Pratt also with a degree in engineering and worked for Schreider Valve Company.
He had two sisters, Marie, Jean and a brother, Howard, “Don”.
He was married to his first wife, Marilyn Jayne Brooker in 1953 in Livonia, Michigan. They moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 1958 where he worked in advertising specialties. They divorced in 1964 after having two sons, Douglas and Jeffery.
He married Phyllis Joan Shick with her sons, Scott, Steve and Sidney Miles in 1969 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
They owned and managed a successful real estate brokerage in Ft. Lauderdale for a number of years. Doug served in several positions with the Fort Lauderdale Area Board of Realtors including President in 1981. He was a strong advocate for property rights and made a strong impression on State and local government leaders.
He and Phyllis moved to Tavares where he continued to work in real estate until he was 80.
They were active members in the First Baptist Church of Mt. Dora. He was a Deacon, serving several terms and taught Sunday school with Phyllis.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Joan Cole and his two sons, Douglas Brooke Cole, his wife, Dawn and Jeffery Christopher Cole and his wife Sandy.
Doug and Dawn have three sons, Douglas, (married to Sarah), Justin Michael, (married to Lindsay with two daughters, Fiona Dawn Cole and Ava Sue Cole), and Christopher James Cole, (Angelina Schmalzried with their two daughters, Ingrid Helena Cole and Ursula Paz Cole).
Jeff has two sons, Christopher and Jeffery.
Phyllis’ children, Scott and Kathy Miles with a daughter, Delacie; Sid and Debbie Miles of Clarion, PA and their children, Ryan and Nancee, Curt, Theron, Sheldon and Kyla Miles. Three great grandchildren, Ryan Jr., Harper and Calista.
Doug also has two nieces Linda (Lynn) Cockrill and Christine Wallace.
A Memorial Service will be held on September 4, 2014 starting at 11:00 a.m. at:
Steverson, Hamlin and Hilbish Funeral Home, 226 East Burleigh Blvd, Tavares, FL 32778.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society on behalf of Douglas O. Cole in lieu of flowers.
