Barbara Mary Pokusa's Obituary
Barbara was born at home in Oadby Leicester, England on September 2nd 1920. Barbara passed away on Thursday March 31, 2016 at the age of 95 in Eustis, Florida. Barbara loved her Royal Family as much as she loved her own. She was raised as a Christian in the Church of England as an Anglican.
While living in England during WWII she served as a Triage Nurse alongside Her Father, and then a Medical Officer with the Royal Navy serving The Order of St. John Ambulance, In Service of Mankind.
Barbara’s war efforts were later recognized by Lady Clementine Churchill in December of 1941 and then by Sir Winston Churchill in March of 1950.
Barbara migrated to Canada and then to the United States after being a war Bride. She became a US citizen and served as a Volunteer with the American Red Cross and Nursing Director for the Civil defense Unit. She was a member of The League of Women Voters and became involved with the world of local politics. Barbara was also a staunch supporter of the Police Department in the communities in which she lived.
After moving to Florida in July 1977, she enjoyed gardening in the Florida sunshine. She said and believed one is closer to God in the garden. She loved animals, especially dogs, and she volunteered her time at the Lake County Humane Society Resale Shop in Eustis and at the Adoption/Rescue Shelter located in Dona Vista, Florida.
Barbara is survived by her daughter: Marie (Alberto) Gan; Grandson: Robert C. Eaton, MD; Son: Robert John; Granddaughter’s: Courtney Marie, Brittany Anne, of Michigan; Niece: Jacqueline Allender, of Norfolk, England: and many Nieces, Nephews, Grand-Nieces, and Grand-Nephews, of Ottawa, Canada.
Her Memorial Service is to be held on April 9th, 2016 at 10:00AM at Steverson Hamlin and Hilbish Funeral Home, located at 226 East Burleigh, Blvd Tavares, FL 32778. A visitation will be held prior to service from 9:00AM to 10:00AM at Steverson Hamlin and Hilbish Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Humane Society of Lake County or The American Red Cross.
