Alene N. Sturtz's Obituary
Alene Nelson Sturtz, 86, of Tavares, Florida, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2014. Alene was born in Miami, Florida on September 29, 1927, and moved with her husband, Philip Altman, Jr., to Lake County in the mid-50’s. Upon Phil’s death in 1970, Alene worked for Bank of Tavares, and then Royal Aluminum in Leesburg where she retired in 1990. Alene married Bernie Sturtz in 1974. She was very involved in the Lake County Quilters Guild for many years, and most recently volunteered at Florida Hospital Waterman as an auxiliary member. A resident of Lake Frances Estates in Tavares for 20+ years, Alene is survived by two siblings, Betty Jagger (sister) of Los Angeles and Glenn Nelson (brother) of Crystal River; seven children – Wendy Altman (daughter) of Dawsonville, GA, Sheri Sebree (daughter) of Umatilla, Flip Altman (son) of Gainesville, GA, Penny Cabibi (step-daughter) of New Orleans, Michelle Sturtz (step-daughter) of Lake City, Sherry Nelson (step-daughter) of Umatilla, and Stephanie Crook (step-daughter) of Greenville, SC; ten grandchildren (Brian, Dolan, Haylee, Audrey, Ava, Chris, CT, Allie, Vicki and Cassie); great grand-children (Aubrey and Taylor). Alene loved playing bingo, poker, and spending time with her family and friends. Services for Alene will be held at the First Baptist Church of Umatilla on Wednesday, April 2, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following organizations: Florida Hospital Waterman Auxiliary, 1000 Waterman Way, Tavares, FL 32778, or First Baptist Church of Umatilla – Building Fund, 550 Hatfield Drive, Umatilla, FL 32784.
